Geschmacksfragen: Mary Middlefield

Your current favourite Song?

“Sweet Dreams, TN” by The Last Shadow Puppets. I keep coming back to this song, and I can’t seem to get enough of it. I love the arrangement and production—it feels raw yet cinematic at the same time. And Alex Turner’s attitude in the delivery? It’s intoxicating. There’s something almost unhinged about the way he sings it, like he’s teetering between obsession and adoration. That tension just does something to me.

Your current favourite record?

Lady Gaga’s Mayhem has been on repeat ever since it came out. I’ve admired Gaga’s artistry ever since I was a kid—she’s fearless, unpredictable, and constantly evolving. This record feels like a return to something primal and chaotic in the best way. It’s messy, glamorous, and a little dangerous. I’ve been longing for a record like this to come out again.

Your favourite place?

My home. It’s where I feel most myself, where I don’t feel judged, the place where I relax, where I’m most creative, and also where I sleep! There’s something about being in your own space, surrounded by little things that hold memories—books, instruments, candles, unfinished ideas scribbled down on paper. It’s a place where I don’t have to be anything for anyone, and I love that.

Your favourite drink?

Very basic, but I love an Espresso Martini. It’s the perfect dessert after a nice dinner. I prefer mine decaf, though—coffee makes me all jittery, and no one needs to see that. There’s something about that mix of bitter and sweet, the velvety foam on top, the slight buzz of the alcohol—it’s indulgent but still has an edge.

Your favourite food?

I’ve been obsessed with ramen recently. I could eat it every day, and my friends would definitely back me up on this. There’s just something about noodles in a rich broth that makes me happy. It’s comfort in a bowl—warm, a little messy, and always satisfying. Plus, there are endless variations, so it never gets boring.

What you’d like to read about yourself but hasn’t been written about you yet?

I think I’m currently putting out everything that I want known and written about myself. I like having people know my music more than my personality—because that’s where the real me exists. The emotions, the thoughts, the stories I tell in my songs—that’s what matters most to me.
