5 Fragen an Hugh

Asche auf mein Haupt! Da habe ich diese Rubrik monatelang so regelmäßig geführt, hatte immer einen Künstler in petto und kaum bin ich in der Hauptstadt, vernachlässige ich sie. Dabei gibt es so viele Bands, die prädestiniert sind für diese Rubrik! Ich gelobe Besserung und habe eine musikalische Perle aus dem schönen England für euch. Als eine Art der Wiedergutmachung.

1. Who are you?

Izzy: Someone once said we were like watching ballet
Josh: We are Hugh, we make music about Love and Confidence.

2. How would you describe yourself in 5 sentences?

Izzy: – bouncy
– british
– loving
– dreamy
– classic

Josh: I once ate 12 crispy creme donuts in one go. Izzy is a very good rapper. Our name is taken from Hugh Grant; Before he did romantic comedies he did period romantic dramas and that what we imagine when we’d write a song. We dance as good as we sing. Our first video, for ‚I can’t figure you out‘ had a moment with the dressage community and it gave us so much joy.

3. Tell me your latest news?

Izzy: Putting out the album.

Josh: We released our first single, This Is How It Starts in Feb, and we did our first international date with Lekker Collective and Majestic Casual in Berlin. They are such lovely souls and the show was a dream. We’re dropping our album in May/June and then shows… lots of shows.

4. What kind of musicians do you look up to?

Izzy: Feeling very proud of British music at the moment, the grime scene is a fine example of what hard work alongside that ‚unwillingness to change or alter what’s true‘ can achieve. Women are also killing it, Jorja Smith and Ray Blk are high up there for me at the moment.

Josh: Beach House have always been a personal fave. I’m usually a lyrics guy but they’ve got such an evocative sound that always paints a vivid picture in my mind. Then there’s Rufus Wainwright. „Life is a game and true love is its trophy‘ is a beautiful line.

5. Your favourite album or song at the moment?

Izzy: Sampha- (No-one knows me) Like the piano
Josh: Solar Bears – Supermigration. I discovered them a month after they broke up 🙁

Hugh sind eigentlich die vier: Izzy, Josh, Andy und Tino. Die Kennlerngeschichte von Andy und Josh finde ich ganz amüsant. Es war in einer Bar, als sie sich kennenlernten und Josh rempelte ausversehen Andy an, als er gerade versuchte einen Song zu shazamen. Sowas könnte mir auch passieren…
Nach einem Auftritt auf dem SXSW gelten Hugh vielleicht noch als Geheimtipp. Doch AlunaGeorge und Diplo gehören schon zu ihren Fans. Also ist es nur noch eine Frage der Zeit, wann der Geheimtippstatus passé sein wird.

Apropos AlunaGeorge – ein wenig erinnern mich Hugh an AlunaGeorge. Vielleicht liegt es an der entspannten und dennoch clubbigen Art in ihrer Musik. Und am englischen Akzent, den man sofort heraushört.

Für Ende Mai haben die vier nun ihr Debütalbum „Love, Hugh“ angekündigt und ich bin schon sehr gespannt, welche von ihren bisher veröffentlichten Titeln es aufs Album geschafft haben und überhaupt wie das Album klingen wird. Einmal bei SoundCloud durchgehört ist es ein bunter Mix aus den Uptempo Nummern und den ruhigeren Songs. Es bleibt einem nix anderes übrig, sich in die beiden Stimmen zu verlieben. Da wäre Izzys butterweiche Stimme und Josh, der den etwas tieferen Gegenpart bildet und dennoch genauso weich singt. Hach so schön…
