5 Fragen an We Are The City

Wenn eine Band postet, dass sie gerade wieder im Studio sind und an neuen Titeln arbeiten, dann freuen sich die Fans. Mitbekommen tun sie aber nix, außer ein paar Bildern auf Instagram und Facebook und vielleicht gibt es ein Videotagebuch aus dem Studio. Die kanadische Band We Are The City hat ihre Fans an der neuen Albumproduktion teilhaben lassen, indem sie einen Livestream eingerichtet haben. 24 Stunden, 7 Tage die Woche konnte man die Band beobachten. Das Album ist nun fertig und der Stream nicht mehr verfügbar. Bleibt die Frage, wer diese Band überhaupt ist? Die 5 Fragen beantworten es für euch.

1. Who are you?

I’m Cayne. Hello. I play piano, synths and sing in a band called We Are The City.

2. How would you describe yourself in 5 sentences?

I’m a person with an open mind, I think, well at least I’d like to think. I could write all five sentences about my love for synths and tones, ambiences and loud bass. As I answer these questions I can hear loud dance music from the club beneath our recording space, it’s shaking the floor. I collect small things that no one else wants. I like to try to make ambiences out of the sound of nothing.

3. Tell me your latest news?

We announced recently that we’ll be writing and recording a new record. The exciting part about that is that the entire process will be live streamed, 24/7 from our website. A full look into the creation.

4. What kind of musicians do you look up to?

I actually just saw a band that really inspired me. They are called Battles, a band from New York that are SUPER heavy and technical. I’ve looked up to their playing for a long time. As well, there are some other bands like Radiohead, Mew, Rubik, Cocteau Twins, Bjork, My Bloody Valentine, and a lot more.

5. Your favourite album or song at the moment?

I’m a little late to the punch but I’m really loving Chet Faker. His latest record, which isn’t new at this point, is called „Built On Glass.“ As far as singular songs, I’m always a fan of female fronted pop songs. For instance, one that I’m really loving these days is „Lean On“ by DJ Snake, Diplo and Mø.

Die drei Jungs haben ein Händchen für außergewöhnliche Ideen. So haben sie ihre Single „Keep On Dancing“ in einem Hinterzimmer eines Fahrradladens aufgenommen. Darauf muss man auch erst mal kommen! Im Video kommt selbstverständlich, als wäre es das natürlichste der Welt, ein Pferd durch die Tür spaziert.

Mit der Albumproduktion ging es relativ schnell, denn das fertige Produkt kann man ab dem 13.11. käuflich erwerben und trägt den Titel „Above Club“.

We Are The City ist eine Band, die auf große Bilder in ihren Musikvideos setzt. Die Band taucht auf, spielt aber kleine Rollen und steht nicht im Mittelpunkt. Das gefällt mir. Die Geschichten, die sie mit ihren Videos erzählen möchten, sind mir an manchen Stellen noch nicht ganz klar. Ich frag mich immer noch, welche Rolle das Pferd spielt und warum der Sänger im Brautkleid am Strand steht. Ich muss das wahrscheinlich nicht verstehen, denn am Ende geht es um die Musik!

Da wären wir auch schon beim Thema! Ähnlich wie mit den Videos verhält es sich auch mit ihrer Musik. Es sind keine Titel, zu denen man das Tanzbein schwingt und die ganze Nacht durchtanzen kann. Sie wirken fast etwas schwer und eben passend zu den gezeigten Bildern. Dennoch gefällt mir diese Schwere und das es nicht immer peppig ist. „Keep On Dancing“ hat auch etwas Beruhigendes…
